How to distribute tips fairly in a restaurant

Tips should be shared fairly between kitchen and floor and reported correctly in payroll. Here are the most common models and how to avoid manual work.

Tips are an important part of pay for many restaurant staff. They are also a common source of questions if the distribution feels unclear. With a clear model and a system that does the maths, it becomes both fair and simple.

Common tip distribution models

  • Per hour worked – everyone on the shift shares by hours
  • Per shift – each shift gets an equal share
  • Weighted – floor and kitchen get different shares under an agreed key
  • By role – e.g. waiters, bartenders and chefs get different percentages

Tips belong in payroll

Tips distributed through the employer, such as card tips, count as salary. They must be included in payroll data and the employer declaration. Check with the Swedish Tax Agency or your accountant if you are unsure what applies to you.

How ShiftCore helps

In ShiftCore tips are recorded per shift and distributed automatically based on clocked time and the rules you choose. Amounts go straight into payroll data and staff see their share in the app.
